Embark has just launched a new breeder's resource zone...here, one can read articles on cutting-edge canine genome studies...or, watch videos on same...cool huh? Click right here to go there...
Whereas humans consume this mild anthelminic for effective Pinworm eviction...we doggists have used it forevahhh as our drug-of-choice for extremely effective Roundworm removal in wee neonates (I worm from age 12 days onwards for the first 6 months of life). I show it here just to remind you of the dosage (again, this is human-labeled). It is extremely inexpensive when purchased from Amazon, Revival etc...(usually $1.00 per oz...sold in 16 or 32 oz. options...).
Inserting it drop-by-drop into the mouths of puppies with a syringe is do-able, as is giving it individually atop something delectable such as ice cream. I've commented on worms in puppies before...trust me, your dogs has worms! Managing those tenants is a must... France's most ancient scent-hound breed...oh...how I would love to have my hand upon the ears of one...& to enjoy their melodic voice. I love how this gentleman stays out of the way of his pup's work...he's patient, quiet & absolutely perfect with his dog. I felt like I was right there! Cool! I love these! Investing in the very best food that can be had, without investing in the very best/safest dishware, kind of defeats the purpose. These bowls are cadmium, mercury and cobalt free...made from 100% US-sourced steel. Man-(& woman)-u-factured in the USA, baby! Basis Pet!
Opinionated in & out of the field...the Dachshund is FANTASTIC! Gorilla! I have the largest size that they make...what we really love about it is: it remains cool in the hottest temps. At just over $300.00, this bed is certainly on the more expensive side of things, yet...I love mine. The ballistic nylon cover is easily vacuumed & it remains cool in temperature on the most sweltering days. This makes it cool at every level...I will definitely be ordering a rectangular memory-foam bed as well...
I've always enjoyed having Evangers canned dog food in my pantry...that's why I was one of the thousands of people who bought "Hunk of Beef" &/or "Against The Grain"...from them. Essentially, one could open the can & precisely what they advertise (in my case, a hunk of beef) would be sitting in a sumptuous broth...my dogs were agog! They LOVED it. The problem was: some of it was pentobarbitol-tainted horse meat. This can certainly be lethal to dogs. And it was. Thus, a class-action lawsuit occurred of which I was a part (& I received compensation for the cases of Hunk Of Beef that I'd purchased on 8/22/2020). Evangers has, in turn, filed a lawsuit against their meat supplier (for, among other things, fraud)...click here to review. It's important! As we absolutely DO NOT want our dogs consuming tainted (i.e. euthanol) horse meat fraudulently sold as "beef". Check out the pet food industry's take on this whole thing... Be savvy & safe! I now purchase Petkind Venison Tripe from NZ...AND...I still adore Evangers as well...I now limit my acquisitions to their Whole Chicken Thigh in a can...I won't be purchasing Hunk Of Beef from them again...though it is likely the safest product out there right now. The entire thing is tragic, really... You know me...I LOVE Idahound! Being in close proximity to them, my dogs are on a monthly subscription of frozen green tripe & rabbit & believe me, I'm thankful!!! I adore their elk antlers almost as much as my dogs do...as they provide my beasts with tons of elegant chewery. No stench (which means no destroyed furniture, no flies & no mortified olfactory zones). No hazards...no breakage...Nope! The solid antlers are quite enormous, with all edges having been sanded down by the glam-squad at Idahound...& at under $50.00 for 3...what a deal. I love this project! Because I adore Dobermans! Imagine the heartbreak of living with a beloved dog whom you know could a) die at any moment; b)develop a lethal condition at any moment. Both of these, due to genetic propensities &/or conditions. Enter the Doberman Diversity Project. Here is their mission statement: OUR MISSION is to reduce the incidence of heritable diseases in the Doberman by studying and addressing the depression in the overall genetic diversity of the Doberman breed and studying and researching widespread disease-associated mutations, through comprehensive genetic testing and analysis, development and sharing of evidence-based breeding findings, development of online breeder decision-making tools, and long-term tracking of results to measure the effectiveness of varied approaches to breeding -- in terms of genetic health and longevity. What Dobermans carry: a) Cardiomyopathy. Approximately 1/4th of Dobes who develop cardiomyopathy die from seemingly unknown causes. Additionally, 50% die of congestive heart failure. Female Dobes have a sudden death manifestation of cardiomyopathy, with males developing congestive heart failure. Is it sex-linked?
b) Wobbler Syndrome (cervical spondylomyelopathy)...a disease of the neck vertebrae, affecting the entire spine. Approx. 5.5% of Dobes have this wretched disease...with approx. 5% of they who have it gradually becoming completely paralysed. Here's a 2017 quote from The Canine Institute of Biology's Carol Beuchat, please note that her entire article on Dobes is available right here. "The Doberman Pinscher is in serious trouble. About 60% of the breed is afflicted with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), with 13% affected by the time they are 6 years old and more than 40% by the age of 8. The disorder has an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance, but the causative genes are unknown." c) Osteosarcoma, incurable, painful & wholly tragic... Tis the data as regards this breed that is exceptional. This is due entirely to the excellent health testing performed by breeders! Keeping the testing state-of-the-art is key. Embark in conjunction with the Doberman Diversity Project will likely make an historic revelation as regards the above diseases...& the others which plague Dobes (VWB, HD, Thyroid, Hep etc...). What can be done now? Preservation breeding of clear & clear-ish dogs, the freezing of semen from healthy dogs whose pups can be observed for health issues, longevity etc...harvesting the eggs from really good bitches with similar observation protocols employed per her lineage. Consideration of introducing (or reintroducing the founding breeds all over again)...Manchester/Blk. & Tan...etc...& re-grouping. I think it is quite possible that diet & wanton dog breeding destroyed this breed...& that a perfect storm was elicited for mutations to occur in this most unwholesome fashion. Obviously, if you follow me, you know that I'm a complete armchair chest-banging doggist. But, legumes & peas...commercial kibble...& other modern, convenient poisons have had deleterious effects on many living things, as does inexperienced/incompetent propagation. It is not just the Dobe that's been wiped out! Just ask the Bernese Mountain Dog...whose lifespan is the lowest of all purebred breeds at just 6.5 years! Think about that! With the minimum of that lovely breed owning a 35% genetic inbreeding coefficient...I think the only way to preserve/conserve poisoned genetics is to add some vigor. This will come in the form of complete outcrosses & selective breeding thereon...what say YOU? The below heavy-duty, lined reins are manufactured by Weaver as: "Weaver Working Cowboy Split Reins"...I purchase the 8'x 5/8" variety. I then purchase a set of 2 pure brass bull snaps...
Quickly: one can purchase the reins on Amazon or from a tack vendor such as Stateline for approx. $29.00 per set. The bull snaps are in the range of $12.00 each...I don't purchase anything for a large dog other than bull snaps (yes, they're heavy...but everything else can/will fail). There are loads of really cool carabiners, clips & snaps...they all have the proclivity to break though! The last thing one wants is a break at the most pertinent moment, right? Back to the reins...I had purchased my first set for one of my Andalusians...they were WAY too heavy for such sensitive mouths & such curvy necks...but, I knew immediately that they would be grrrreat as dog leashes... Math: the ultimate dog leash x2...for approx. $60.00-ish I love the Thylacine! I hope they're somehow still out there...this is a retro film I had not seen before...Tasman coat-of-arms... What a nice week of music huh? This concludes a few days of dog-songs... |
